Creating Patterns for a More Thoughtful Future
The Story
After years of designing products destined for landfills, I found myself asking a different question: What if beauty could last forever?
I’m Carrie Mather, and I founded Carrie Mather Design to create textile patterns that honor both artistry and environmental responsibility. My work exists at the intersection of luxury and sustainability—designing patterns that deserve to live in garments made to last generations.
The seeds of this work were planted in childhood moments spent gazing out windows, seeing faces emerge from the patterns of leaves and shadows. That dreamy, liminal state of perception—where the mind finds familiar forms in abstract arrangements—continues to inform how I design today. I’m drawn to that threshold between recognition and mystery, creating patterns that invite discovery and reward sustained attention.
The Mission
My mission is to partner with thoughtful fashion houses that prioritize environmental and ethical responsibility, providing distinctive textile designs that transcend trends and contribute to a more sustainable luxury market.
I create patterns with enduring uniqueness—designs that become part of a brand’s signature aesthetic rather than seasonal decoration, supporting the creation of heirloom garments that stand the test of time and never see a landfill.
The Purpose
Carrie Mather Design creates sophisticated textile patterns that honor both artistry and responsibility. I design for the intersection of luxury and sustainability, crafting patterns that deserve to live in garments made to last generations.
My work walks the delicate line between abstraction and recognition, creating rich sensory experiences that reveal new depths over time. I believe true luxury lies not in disposability, but in creating beauty so compelling and timeless that it becomes treasured, collected, and passed down as heritage.
The Journey
I graduated in 2008 with a BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design and began my career as a product and packaging designer in the consumer goods industry. After several years, I became disenchanted by the continuous cycle of design and discard—creating mass-produced objects destined for brief lives and inevitable disposal.
This experience led me to transition into the non-profit EdTech sector, where I continue to work today, seeking more meaningful applications for design. Through Carrie Mather Design, I’ve found a way to combine my love of pattern with my commitment to sustainability. Here, I can create designs meant to endure rather than expire, working toward a future where beauty and responsibility walk hand in hand.
The Work
Every pattern I create is designed with intention and built for longevity. My collections—Alchemy, Heritage, Chimera, and Verdant—each explore different aspects of that liminal space between the familiar and the unexpected.
Whether working with fluid, organic forms or structured geometric compositions, my goal remains constant: to create patterns that enhance rather than diminish, that contribute to a more thoughtful approach to luxury, and that prove beauty and sustainability are not just compatible—they’re inseparable.
